Ernst Pulido, Jan Cajulao, and Eduardo Hernandez receive awards for the SFSU CoSE Showcase Poster Presentation

The CoSE Showcase features a variety of exciting student projects, highlighting faculty's commitment to providing SF State students with hands-on experience in the discovery of new knowledge. MS students, Ernst Pulido, Jan Cajulao, and Eduardo Hernandez win 1st place and 3rd place, respectively for their poster presentation. Ernst presented his project on "Protein-Protein Interaction Analysis of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus and its Role in Host Viral Replication" and Jan presented his project on "Endocytosis as a regulator of Glucagon Receptor Signaling". Awesome work Jan, Ernst, and Eduardo!
Eduardo Hernandez will be joining the UCSF-CFAR Scholars Program this summer

First year MS student, Eduardo Hernandez will be joining UCSF's Gladstone Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Scholars program this summer 2022 where he will be participating in HIV research at the intersections of basic, clinical, and behavioral/ epidemiological scientific disciplines.

I recently spoke to Amanda Verzosa who is a Master's student in Dr Erica Sanchez' lab in the Biology Department. She told me about how her Master's was impacted by the SCIP and GOLD programs and how she plans to continue her coding journey as a PhD student at Stanford. Amanda will join the Computational and Systems Immunology PhD track! We are so proud of you, Amanda!
Sanchez lab sends first batch of MS students to PhD programs!

The first batch of MS students are graduating and heading off to PhD programs this Fall 2022.
Ernst Pulido will be joining Stanford's Biophysics program.
Jan Cajulao wil be joining UC Berkeley's Molecular and Cellular Biology program.
Amanda Verzosa will be joining Stanford's Immunology program.
Lorenzo Mena will be joining University of Utah's Molecular Biology program.

With over 12,000 applicants and only 2,000 awardees, the NSF GRFP is a highly competitive fellowship that tries to fund the next generation of innovative scientists who have demonstrated their likeliness of having a significant impact in their field and whom have demonstrated excellence in broad community service.
Jan wrote his proposal on the trafficking and localization of KSHV's viral GPCR. We are so proud of you Jan!
Sanchez Lab Publishes First Review Article

In collaboration with Dr. Tracy Delgado and Shun-Je Bhark from Seattle Pacific University and Dr. Nicole Salazar Velmeshev from San Francisco State University, the Sanchez lab publishes their first review article. "Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Infection of Neuronal and Non-Neuronal Cells Elicits Specific Innate Immune Responses and Immune Evasion Mechanisms" summarizes how HSV-1 is able to manipulate and evade host antiviral innate immune responses both in neuronal and non-neuronal (epithelial) cells.
